Summary/Abstract: The author presents an ethnographic vision of folk old age on the basis of mainly ethnological publications. He draws attention to the mediating nature of old age, to the relationship of theelders with the sacred sphere. He then focuses on the role of the elders in the family. He draws attention to the system of annuities and the disparity between benefits of this kind in Greater Polandand Lesser Poland. He mentions the significance of old beggars. Finally, the author mentions the changes in civilisation that affected the situation of old people. In conclusion, the author claimsthat modern culture has copied the dual view of the elderly, somewhere between good and bad, in the absence of a neutral axiological sphere, which promotes stereotyping.
