Summary/Abstract: A comparative study on the economic elite in post-communist Bulgaria. Hungary and Yugoslavia is being conducted between 1990 and 1994. The comparative analyses of the Bulgaria data and some results from the survey in Hungary are presented in the paper. It first reviews the current societal situation, and argues for the strategic position of the economic elite in any eventual restructuring and developmental path. Second, it considers a central scientific debate over the nature of the behaviour of the economic elite in a period of transformation — adaptive or inertial. The theoretical ideas come from the elitist paradigm and selected perspectives in transition theory. The empirical results offer the unique opportunity to test key hypotheses about elite recruitment and adaptation, survival and failure under conditions of profound disequilibria. Further, the study analyses the adaptation versus inertia policies of the economic elite in macro economic reform and privatization.
