Summary/Abstract: This text is trying to illustrate the conflict between Svetislav Stefanović and conservative literary critics, highlighting the opposing viewpoints they have on the poetry of Laza Kostić. Most of the text uses examples from Kostić’s strongest critics – Ljubomir Nedić, Bogdan Popović and Jovan Skerlić. They were chosen with the goal of illustrating the radical omissions of the most impressive examples in their judgements. It shows us how the totally inept interpretations of a few critics have almost tarnished the reputation of some accomplished Serbian poets (notably, Njegoš, Zmaj and Kostić). Svetislav Stefanović was one of the first to oppose leading literary critics when he began to defend the literal modernism of Laza Kostić. In that way, we could say that he opened a new chapter in Serbian literature of the 20th century.
