Summary/Abstract: On the basis of concrete data from empirical sociological surveys a number of objective and subjective parameters of the contemporary „poor — rich” opposition in Bulgaria is analyzed. In a situation of progressing recapitalization of society the growing tendency of impoverishment of the population has been accompanied by the formation within the last few years of a thin layer of well-to-do people. The objective causes for this development are pointed out and the way the poor and the rich are being perceived by everyday consciousness is studied from a phenomenological perspective. The formation of the overall social context within which the opposition under consideration exists and functions brings about a revival of Some archetypes in the consciousness of the contemporary Bulgarian thus modifying his or her behaviour making it more frustrated and increasingly passive. Quite paradoxically from a social and psychological point of wiew, the establishment of a market-orientated economy, a process normally presupposing activity, entrepreneurial spirit and a will to take risks, has been for the time being planting passivity and a tragic anxiety for the future.
