Summary/Abstract: In this essay, the author recalls the debates on the introduction of religious education in schools during the period 1992-1996. All discussions reminisced here took place in besieged Sarajevo. Despite the challenging circumstances, the debates exuded a free approach to the role of religious education and its treatment within the educational system. Participants in these discussions either rejected or embraced religious education. Some wanted to introduce it into schools under a different name, while others aimed to create an entirely new and “more modern” subject that would replace religious education while simultaneously fulfilling its role in education. Meanwhile, some advocated for infusing other subjects with the spirit of religious education and a positive attitude toward religion.
