Authoritarianism and Democratism in Latin America: Two Sides of the Same Coin

Summary/Abstract: In this article we briefly analyze one of the ingrained aspects of Latin American sociopolitical identity in the twentieth century: the authoritarianism-democratism duality. We formulate the historical, political and social premises that originated the authoritarian and democratic paradigms in Latin America and, at the same time, we propose a tripartite periodization of history according to those moments which marked the beginnings of a democracy constantly undermined by the authoritarianist tendencies of the representatives of power and by subversive movements.
