Summary/Abstract: The almighty authoritarian figure, portrayed by Hispanic American literary Romanticism, is a 19th century history-rooted entity relying on the Argentine despot Juan Manuel de Rosas as a reference point. He appears like a violent, cruel, inhuman, cold, calculated, callous, and barbaric creature that symbolizes the strong, abusive, even demonic side of the Romantic universe. Therefore, Sarmiento’s classic book Facundo (1845) - a politically subversive and protesting text - deals with the problem in deterministic terms, whereas the dictatorial character is intrinsically linked to the geographical environment and national history alike, contemplating a world of antagonisms where the despot, a product of the conflict between civilization and barbarism, embodies the ultimate malignancy.
