Summary/Abstract: The article concerns the concept of the relationship between pleasure and love according to St. Bonaventure. His concept of fruitio, as presented in the commentary on Peter Lombard’s Sentences, can be considered one of the most influential elements that stimulated the Franciscan debate in 14th century. The article aims to show the genesis of pleasure, its types and it is going to describe the relationship between pleasure and volition (desire). The article consists of three parts. In the first one, the two meanings of fruitio will be presented and the difference between quenching thirst and pleasure will be explained. It will also be shown that Bonaventure sees pleasure not only in the act of satisfying desire (fruitio), but in the very immanent structure of desire. The second part of the article is devoted to the concept of will and desire, which for Bonaventure was the starting point for rejecting the cognitive concept of fruition and accepting that fruition is an act of will. The volitional concept of fruition, as it is going to be argued, will allow Bonaventure to develop a third model of pleasure, which is to enjoy the object of desire. The third part is about love. I will show that love — defined by Bonaventure as an affective act of full union with the object of desire — is a condition of pleasure. Finally, I will quote Bonaventure’s argument that love can guarantee union with the object more fully than intellectual cognition.
