- Summary/Abstract: The study in this article focuses on the text-critical restitution of Richard Fishacre’s commentary on I Sent. dist. 27, in which certain theological formulas in the Trinitarian field are examined for the formal correctness of their content. In his commentary, Fishacre uses the 12th-century grammarians’ technique of “suppositio” of a term to resolve the ambiguity of certain terms. Thus, for example, the term “imago” can refer to the divine essence as a principle of similitude, but also to the person of the Son as a principle of assimilation.

- Summary/Abstract: Geoffrey of Aspall (d. 1287), who belonged to the third generation of Oxford scholars commentating on Aristotle’s natural philosophy works, was probably the first Latin scholar to write questions to De sensu et sensato. He must have written them as a mature scholar, for the text is a show of erudition: he is not only well acquainted with Aristotle’s own ideas on sensory perception but he also introduces some ideas taken from earlier commentary tradition and other scientific writings of his times making extensive use of medical, optical and mathematical works. Such a variety of sources allows Geoffrey to address questions that extend beyond the subject of the commented text so much that no one would reasonably expect to encounter at least some of them in Quaestiones in De sensu et sensato. Some of them concern the problem of complexion. How do primary qualities affect temperaments in the organic world? What are the mutual relations between complexion and temperaments? Does the change of proportion on the elementary level translate into the change of colour of a living creature? Although Aspall’s solutions to these problems do not seem entirely satisfactory, they draw our attention to problems lying on the boundary between natural philosophy and medicine that were rarely addressed by philosophers of his times. The doctrinal analysis of those issues is supplemented with a critical edition of question devoted entirely to the problem of complexio in Aspall’s commentary (Qu. 65 In quibus corporibus principaliter reperiuntur extremi colores) preceded by a short introduction.

- Keywords: Medieval sermons; medieval translations; feminatives;
- Summary/Abstract: The paper presents two different linguistic strategies for addressing the problem of gender in medieval preaching to the lay public. While the Latin version of the Maurice de Sully’s sermons uses, in general, the inclusive masculine gender, the vernacular versions feature several feminatives. The said difference is studied from the broader perspective of the relationship between the three versions of Maurice de Sully’s collection of sermons: the Latin text and its two vernacular adaptations. One of these is presented in the manuscripts of the so-called “A family”, the other in the manuscripts of the “B family”. The analysis also showcases some results that the transition from Latin to the vernacular had on the linguistic representation of the world.

- Summary/Abstract: The article concerns the concept of the relationship between pleasure and love according to St. Bonaventure. His concept of fruitio, as presented in the commentary on Peter Lombard’s Sentences, can be considered one of the most influential elements that stimulated the Franciscan debate in 14th century. The article aims to show the genesis of pleasure, its types and it is going to describe the relationship between pleasure and volition (desire). The article consists of three parts. In the first one, the two meanings of fruitio will be presented and the difference between quenching thirst and pleasure will be explained. It will also be shown that Bonaventure sees pleasure not only in the act of satisfying desire (fruitio), but in the very immanent structure of desire. The second part of the article is devoted to the concept of will and desire, which for Bonaventure was the starting point for rejecting the cognitive concept of fruition and accepting that fruition is an act of will. The volitional concept of fruition, as it is going to be argued, will allow Bonaventure to develop a third model of pleasure, which is to enjoy the object of desire. The third part is about love. I will show that love — defined by Bonaventure as an affective act of full union with the object of desire — is a condition of pleasure. Finally, I will quote Bonaventure’s argument that love can guarantee union with the object more fully than intellectual cognition.

- Keywords: Aristotelianism; Medieval ethics; Voluntary and involuntary action; Walter Burley; Thomas Aquinas;
- Summary/Abstract: Walter Burley’s late commentary on the Nicomachean Ethics is a monumental eclectic work, in which he combines traits coming from various sources. This can also be seen in the commentary on the first chapter of book III, devoted to the problem of human will and the limitations of voluntary action. In the dubia attached to the commentary, he discusses several possible sources of such limitations, namely fear, compulsion and ignorance. He also analyses the interrelations between the will and choice paying attention to the problems of deliberation and judgement. The solutions that he gives in the dubia seem to be less influenced by Aquinas than the ad litteram sections.

- Summary/Abstract: In the medieval Latin translation of Aristotle’s De generatione we encounter the term ‘virtus’ in the context of the description of mixed bodies. We read there that the ‘virtue’ of the qualities of elements remain in the mixtum („salvatur enim virtus eorum”). Obviously, Aristotle himself meant here that these qualities remain in any mixtum „virtually”, that is in potentia, yet fourteenth-century Oxford and Paris philosophers gave the notion of ‘virtue’ a different meaning in this context. Walter Burley, when commenting on the above-mentioned passage from Aristotle’s De generatione, clearly presents virtutes elementorum as factors responsible for self-induced qualitative changes within a mixtum. Even though Richard Kilvington in his commentary on De generatione uses the term ‘virtus’ synonimically with the term ‘potentia’, as it seems, in his discussions on transmutation and reaction in elementary bodies these terms are used to represent such factors as well, which can be quantified and calculated. In the article I reconstruct the meaning of the terms ‘virtus/potentia rei’ in the context of fourteenth-century natural philosophy on a basis of the texts of Walter Burley, Richard Kilvington, John Buridan, Richard Swineshead, and Nicole Oresme. Also, I allude here to the issue of anachronistic interpretation of medieval ideas and concepts by the historians of science.

Jakoż i my mamy szczęście, że do rąk naszych dotarła opowieść, jaką bohater dnia dzisiejszego, profesor Zenon Kałuża, napisał o pewnym Zenonie K. Zrozumiecie więc Państwo doskonale, że mając w ręku dokument takiej wagi, bez żalu porzuciłem zamiar przedstawienia własnymi słowami osoby laureata Medalu św. Jacka.

Short Description
“The Annual Review of the Thomistic Institute” was established in 1984 in continuity with “Polski Przegląd Tomistyczny” (“Polish Thomistic Review”) founded by Dominican Friars in January 1939. The calamities of the II World War and crooked history of post-war Poland made this 75 years gap inevitable. This review publishes results of studies on intellectual and spiritual Christian tradition with a particular emphasis on Polish heritage, research on Middle Ages, and philosophical and theological quest inspired by St. Thomas Aquinas. “Przegląd Tomistyczny” publishes only original articles and book reviews in Polish, English, French, German, and Italian. It publishes also editions of short historical Latin texts as well as Polish translations of short source texts.
