Summary/Abstract: The grand communications projects launched in the Habsburg Monarchy in the early twentieth century also encompassed Galicia. In 1911 in the small village of Brzeźnica, a ceremony took place to mark the inauguration of the construction of the Galician canal that was to form part of these projects. The author describes and analyses the components of this celebration, which the Polish Club or the Krakow economic local authority were responsible for planning. The individual parts of the celebrations variously emphasised the contribution of politicians and the project’s civilisational importance. The focus of the article is the question to what extent these contents, as well as the ultimate abandonment of the project, led to the ceremony and the canal itself being forgotten.
