Summary/Abstract: The paper dealt with the living practice of burying outside official cemeteries in the territory of Western Serbia, in which economic mechanisms of preservation of estate as inalienable and indivisible family property are singled out as the most noticeable example of present practice. Although in the studied area, based on the conducted research, this custom is recorded as a practice that finds its roots in the period during the First World War as a consequence of socio-economic, practical and sentimental reasons, today it mostly finds its causes in the devastation of the village by the disintegration of family cooperatives, where as a way for the survival of the estate in the collapsed rural system, there is a “manipulation” of the property, which, due to the presence of a burial place, would not become the object of external economic transactions or internal division societies among family members. The abandonment of villages that began during the 19th century and peaked during the next century in the context of mass industrialization and going to cities or more developed states, led to the division of the inheritance and the dismemberment of the heritage embodied in the family estate, house and garden
