Summary/Abstract: Based on the views of a group of critically-oriented authors and academic debates on negotiations over cultural heritage, this paper reexamines the possibility of using cultural heritage as a medium for reconciliation and an instrument for post-conflict stabilization. The paper uses the example of singing to the accompaniment of the Gusle, an ethnically attributed element that different communities appropriate as their own heritage. The inclusion of this practice on UNESCO’s Representative List of the IntangibleCultural Heritage has led to a regional cultural-political controversy over ownership of the element. This example engages in a dialogue with the system of cultural heritage protection, identity policies, and the programmatic policies of internationalorganizations, while simultaneously viewing cultural heritage as a tool for both creating and resolving conflicts.
