Summary/Abstract: “Through the medium of photography, fashion and fi ne art have always been in dialogue – but Cindy Sherman goes further; she interrogates the system that supports fashion, its glossy surface and its dark underbelly” – says the recommendation for the exhibition Cindy Sherman – Anti fashion at the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart. Over the last fi fty years, Sherman has collaborated with numerous wellknown fashion houses such as Balenciaga, Comme des Garçons, Marc Jacobs, Louis Vuitton, or Stella McCartney, as well as fashion magazines like Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, and Cosmopolitan. Despite this, it was with Rei Kawakubo, a trailblazer of anti-fashion, that Cindy Sherman created her most provocative works subverting fashion photography. Rei Kawakubo from her part also collaborated with various renowned fashion photographers, such as Paolo Roversi, Craig McDean, or Nick Knight, but it was Cindy Sherman who transported the perspective of anti-fashion into fashion photography. Through an analysis of Sherman and Kawakubo’s collaboration, I delve into their deconstruction of institutions, conventions, aesthetics, and diverse cultural and gender stereotypes within the realms of photography and fashion.
