Summary/Abstract: “Translating Poetry – An Impossible Task?” – this is the question raised by Zsuzsa Ajtony in her text with the same title, analysing the Hungarian translations of T. S. Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats. Quoting Kosztolányi, Lackfi, Robinson, Wittgenstein, and Benjamin and analysing the Hungarian translation of T. S. Eliot’s book translated by Attila Havasi and DánielVarró – Macskák – Opossszum Apó hasznos és mulattató Macskáriuma (2019) –, Zsuzsa Ajtony argues that the impossible is possible – poetry is translatable. Ishare Ajtony’s idea and reading the French and Hungarian translations of E. A. Poe’s poem The Bells, interpreted by Iván Fónagy and Jacques Derrida, I argue that translating poetry is the poetry of the impossible.
