Summary/Abstract: The volume greets Dr Zsuzsanna Ajtony, Associate Professor at the Department of Humanities of Sapientia Hungarian University of Transylvania. It is a tribute to her career as a secondary school teacher and later as a university staff member and researcher, whose guiding principle is: “I have been preoccupied with the combination of language teaching, literature, and the joy of reading ever since I started the teaching profession or since this profession ‘chose’ me.” The writings collected in this volume are related mainly to her fields of interest (language teaching, linguistics, imagology, literature, and translation studies), but they also provide insight into other related fields of the humanities (film studies, history, cultural history). On the occasion of the round anniversary, through the language and code system of scientific research, we wish her joyful and fruitful work in the future!

Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats. Quoting Kosztolányi, Lackfi, Robinson, Wittgenstein, and Benjamin and analysing the Hungarian translation of T. S. Eliot’s book translated by Attila Havasi and DánielVarró – Macskák – Opossszum Apó hasznos és mulattató Macskáriuma (2019) –, Zsuzsa Ajtony argues that the impossible is possible – poetry is translatable. Ishare Ajtony’s idea and reading the French and Hungarian translations of E. A. Poe’s poem The Bells, interpreted by Iván Fónagy and Jacques Derrida, I argue that translating poetry is the poetry of the impossible.

- Summary/Abstract:Translators and interpreters are, according to popular belief (and not infrequently in practice), people who do their supposedly mysterious work hidden from the public eye, on the borderline between the known and the unknown. In my study, I will examine the representation of translators, and through their work that of translation, as a mediating activity between languages and cultures, and thus as a way of interpreting the world as presented in contemporary literature. In the novels of Leila Aboulela, Ann Patchett, Rachel Cantor, Rabih Alameddine, or R. F. Kuang, the figure of the translator(s) is foregrounded, and various translation theories play a key role in shaping the narratives, conflicts, and characters of the novels.

- Summary/Abstract:In this paper, I shall compare the Hungarian and Romanian translations of J. K. Rowling’s children’s book The Christmas Pig, published in 2021,translated into Hungarian by Tamás Boldizsár Tóth and into Romanian by Tatiana Dragomir. I will examine which elements of the source-language text pose similar or different challenges for the translators, what solutions they find to these challenges, and how the specificities of the target languages, in addition to the translator’s habitus and ingenuity, influence the success of thelinguistic mediation. As a theoretical background, I use Komissarov’s theory regarding equivalence and Katherina Reiss and Hans J. Vermeer’s skopos theory. The book was translated into several languages in the year of its publication, partly due to the popularity of the author and partly due to well-established translation routes. Rowling has an established translators’ team in different languages, who have translated several of her books, and thus there could be awell-established set of procedures and translation tools that may be of interest to the researchers. It seems particularly fascinating to analyse a children’s book from the perspective of translation.

- Summary/Abstract:Culture-bound terms and lexemes, realia and/or culturemes are linguistic units that denote or carry cultural information. They are lexical items that have a specific connotative and affective-emotional meaning and that, because of their common cultural background, evoke similar associations in the members of a group or community. The issue of culturemes and realia has been addressed in international translation studies by several specialists (see, for example, the works of V. Skalkin, Vereşciagin and Kostomarov, Sipko, Vlahov and Florin, Newmark, Baker, Klaudy, Molina). In the present study, we will look at the Romanian literature on the subject (in the works of Lungu Badea, Moţoc, Ţaran Andreici, Ungureanu, etc.).

- Summary/Abstract:The purpose of this study is to present the importance of teaching specialized languages and terminology to students studying translation and interpreting with a special regard to the translator training BA programme offered by the Faculty of Technical and Human Sciences, Târgu-Mureş (Sapientia Hungarian University of Transylvania). The paper also deals with the practical aspects of teaching specialized languages from the viewpoint of translation studies. After defining specialized languages in general, the paper briefly presents the differences between teaching a foreign language and a certain specialized register of a foreign language (for example, medical English, legal English, business English, etc.). Furthermore, the paper presents the shortcomings of teaching specialized languages in Romania and Transylvania. Another aim of the paper is to shed light on how the teachers of the Faculty of Technical and Human Sciences, Târgu-Mureş – based on the curriculum of the specialization – plan their specialized language courses for translation trainees and on how their methods support students to gain knowledge in the field of specialized translation.

- Summary/Abstract:Rooted in Sally Potter’s multimedia practices, film emerges throughout her artistic oeuvre at the crossroads of arts, and it is nourished by artistic impulses beyond its boundaries. The overflowing presence of the other arts has resulted in overtly intermedial and reflexive works, which attest to the symbiotic communion of arts. Rethinking the conclusions of earlier studies focused on the intermediality of The Tango Lesson (1997) (Pieldner 2019) as well as the intersensuality of The Roads Not Taken (2020) (Pieldner 2023), this paper aims to enlarge the frame of analysis by looking at a selection of films also including Sally Potter’s Yes (2004). In these films, intermediality and intersensuality appear as a performative space whereby the presence of the other arts is substantially linked to the theme of otherness. Intersubjectivity is among the central themes of Sally Potter’s films. This paper looks at how the issue of the Other is approached through intermedial crossroads among film and literature, painting, dance, theatre, and sculpture.

- Summary/Abstract:The study investigates the use of language in classroom interactions in Romanian language and literature classes of Hungarian students. After a theoretical introduction, the author summarizes previous research on the topic and presents the conclusions of data collection using a reflective diary. The author seeks to answer the question of how the digitalization of the classroom during the COVID period affected the use of language in the classroom, as perceived by the teachers who participated in the research. The data suggest that digital classrooms did not significantly change the language use routines of these lessons, but they did provide opportunities for rapid and creative processing of a number of digital language use resources; however, the shared emotional-attitudinal and learning experiences of concrete classroom presence were not compensated for by these opportunities.

- Summary/Abstract:Our paper explores the functional diversity of the English pragmatic marker ‘of course’ and compares it to its Hungarian near-equivalent ‘persze’ by contrasting AI-generated and human expert analyses. The findings highlight the limitations of relying on AI output and underline the importance of human supervision. With regard to the English–Hungarian contrastive data, we point out that pragmatic nuances are likely to make the successful application of the sense of enthusiastic agreement, whereas the English ‘of course’ does not have this component, but the latter can function effectively as a device of politeness. Differences like this are challenging for non-native speakers in the absence of targeted language-dependent contrastive information. Our demonstration GPT run failed to provide this specific contrastive information even when asked todo so, but it pinpointed other differences that were useful. As a result, the paper demonstrates the potential of using advancements in neural language modelling in the area of pragmatic research and language instruction, and it argues that a combination of AI-based and human expert analyses has the potential of discovering the intricacies of human communication precisely and effectively.

- Summary/Abstract:The LinguaSap language proficiency exam is an internal language exam of Sapientia Hungarian University of Transylvania, established in 2012. It offers language exams for the students of the University in the English and German languages. The present exploratory study aimed to examine the English-language skills of university students at the Faculty of Economics, Socio-Human Sciences and Engineering in Miercurea Ciuc based on the LinguaSap test scores in English between the years 2013 and 2023. In order to get an insight into students’ language proficiency skills, quantitative descriptive analyses of the data were performed, focusing on students’ exam test result in the separate language skills. A number of studies suggest that among the four basic language skills, learners consider productive skills (writing and speaking) to be more difficult. The results of the study reveal students’ strengths and weaknesses regarding the different language skills, which might help language teachers plan their lessons and focus more on those skills that prove to be challenging for students.

- Summary/Abstract:The essay aims to show that Romanian learning and teaching is the result of harmonized work and tools. A language can be learnt if we invest a lot of time and energy, if we have the will, the tools, and the teachers, and if we have the conditions that allow the learner to practise the new language. At the same time, it is important that the child reaches the required level in each learning cycle; no one can expect that any omissions or deficiencies that may have accumulated will be made up for in the next learning phase. The present writing is based on personal experience, thus subjectivity cannot be excluded. The author sheds light on the teaching and learning of Romanian from several points of view: as a parent, as a teacher, and as a textbook author. In some places, she expresses her opinion and thoughts in a critical tone. She also points out that it is not impossible to learn Romanian to a certain level, even at a high level, in school, through textbooks, and explains how necessary it is for young people in Szeklerland to stay in their homeland even if they do not know Romanian.

- Summary/Abstract:School and education have a significant influence on a young person’s life path and career choice. In the case of Hungarian-medium education in Transylvania, there is often a risk of choosing a Romanian-medium school, which will lead to further difficulties for Hungarians in Transylvania in the long term. The present research therefore investigated the situation of school mobility and talent management in Covasna County, in a series of interviews covering five public schools. The research revealed that students generally have fewer language change difficulties and do not tend to choose Romanian as a language of instruction. However, the chances of finding a job are clearly hampered by a lack of knowledge of the national language. This in turn leads to the fact that young people who study abroad generally do not return to their homeland despite the attention paid to talent management in the schools of the county.

- Summary/Abstract:In a significant part of Hungarian folk songs, metaphorical images of nature represent many dimensions of human life: emotional, moral, social. Using the methodological framework of cultural linguistics, this paper explores the conceptualizations of TREE and tree species through the analysis of the metaphors and metonymies associated with them. As a result, the TREE metaphors of folk songs are grouped into three main categories: TREE ASHUMAN, TREE AS EMOTION, and TREE AS RELATIONSHIP, within which further specific metaphors can be identified. The analysis also explores the relationship between these metaphors and the individual tree species (the most common ones include poplar, rose tree, walnut), seeking to explain the possible motivation for the metaphorical meaning of the tree species.

As a result of the research, the reader will be able to find out the significance of these names, compare their different spellings, and get an idea of the diversity of family names in Jigodin. Exploring the historical onomastic material also provides an opportunity for a contrastive study of today’s onomastic material, and therefore it can offer valuable data for those involved in onomastic or genealogical research.

- Summary/Abstract:A significant part of the 17th-century Romanian literature was written under the aegis of the Reformation and Counter-Reformation. The Hungarian influence on several old Romanian texts can be traced back to the rise of Calvinism. The Hungarian bearings, called “Hungaricum” by Gedeon Borsa, manifest in various ways in the Romanian texts of the 17th and 18th centuries. There are some Romanian texts for which Hungarian literature stands as a source (see the catechetical literature and other ecclesiastical texts), but there are also some in which the Hungarian text is present throughout the whole publication (see the Romanian–Hungarian bilingual texts). At the same time, the Hungarian language and culture also indirectly influenced the Romanian language(mainly Transylvanian) literacy, not only as a tool but also as a model(see the use of Hungarian spelling and the Latin alphabet). This paper aims to explore those Hungarian bearings through which the Romanian texts of the period concerned can (also) be the subject of Hungarian studies.

- Summary/Abstract:The integration of the Transylvanian Principality into the Habsburg Empire led to an increased interest in Catholic confessional historiography. This interest was not only of historical nature but also had a topical political function: to put the Catholic confession – which had been marginalized during the reign of the Principality – in a new light in the newly emerging political situation. Under these circumstances, two works on Transylvanian history were written almost simultaneously by Rudolf Bzenszky (1699) and István Lakatos (1702). The two authors not only knew but also influenced each other, and the direction and nature of this is partly known to researchers. The aim of our paper is to provide further data supporting this intercultural relationship.

- Summary/Abstract:In 1845, Baron Auguste de Gérando (1819–1849) summarized his knowledge acquired about the homeland of his wife, Countess Emma Teleki, in two volumes entitled La Transylvanie et ses habitants, intended for French readers. An active participant in the Hungarian Revolution and War of Independence of 1848–49, the well-educated young man studied and recorded the ethnic groups he met in Transylvania with exemplary openness and understanding. In her old age, his widow, Countess Emma Teleki (1809–1893),published her informative book entitled De Gerando Ágostné, gr. Teleki Emma görögországi levelei és a régi Attikának hiteles kútfők utáni leírása [Ágostné De Gerando, Countess Emma Teleki’s Letters from Greece and the Description of Old Attica Based on Authentic Sources] in 1873. The questions to be answered in the study are as follows: What kind of intellectual network is formed around the couple? What is the intellectual man who moves from more developed countries to Transylvania attentive to, and what does the travelling lady notice in the countries she visits? What kind of auto- and hetero image can be observed in the examined writings? What is the purpose of publishing these writings?

The first part of the present paper expounds on the reception of the volume in Hungarian papers and journals of the period. The second part aims to present the arguments through which the author of the articles (probably George Bariţiu) refutes the parts of Orbán Balázs’s monography that present Romanians in negative terms. The quotations from Orbán’s work provide an insight into the image of Romanians among Hungarians, while the ones taken from the articles show the way Romanians regard Hungarians and themselves. The extracts quoted also reflect on the ethnic relations that had an impact on everyday life between the Austro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867 and World War I.
