Summary/Abstract: Translators and interpreters are, according to popular belief (and not infrequently in practice), people who do their supposedly mysterious work hidden from the public eye, on the borderline between the known and the unknown. In my study, I will examine the representation of translators, and through their work that of translation, as a mediating activity between languages and cultures, and thus as a way of interpreting the world as presented in contemporary literature. In the novels of Leila Aboulela, Ann Patchett, Rachel Cantor, Rabih Alameddine, or R. F. Kuang, the figure of the translator(s) is foregrounded, and various translation theories play a key role in shaping the narratives, conflicts, and characters of the novels.
