Summary/Abstract: In a significant part of Hungarian folk songs, metaphorical images of nature represent many dimensions of human life: emotional, moral, social. Using the methodological framework of cultural linguistics, this paper explores the conceptualizations of TREE and tree species through the analysis of the metaphors and metonymies associated with them. As a result, the TREE metaphors of folk songs are grouped into three main categories: TREE ASHUMAN, TREE AS EMOTION, and TREE AS RELATIONSHIP, within which further specific metaphors can be identified. The analysis also explores the relationship between these metaphors and the individual tree species (the most common ones include poplar, rose tree, walnut), seeking to explain the possible motivation for the metaphorical meaning of the tree species.
