Summary/Abstract: The essay explores the possibilities offered by the introduction of new categories of historical analysis, mainly age and gender, as alternatives to the almost exclusive focus on ethnicity as the only form of identity studied by archaeologists and historians of Russia between the 6th and the mid-7th century. The examination of selected hoard and burial assemblages leads to the conclusion that ethnicity cannot be teased out from the other strands that interact to form social identities. While ethnicity is interwoven with questions of dominance, hierarchy and social stratification, gender and age divisions can be just as powerful markers of social status.
