Summary/Abstract: Ricoeur begins his description of metaphor by likening it to a jewel of language. But the sad fact is that metaphor first struggled with the art of rhetoric, being likened as a trope or as giving meaning to words. The philosopher's thinking about metaphor was precisely to challenge this primary idea. For him, the production and change of meaning is a predicative function, thus proposing a semantic approach to metaphor based not on the semantics of the word, but on the semantics of the phrase producing a leap of meaning or a semantic innovation. He placing metaphor between the phrase and the word. It is this new theory of metaphor that we will examine in this study.
