Summary/Abstract: There was undoubtedly stratification in terms of prestige among local rural communities in pre-partition Poland. However, the formation and evolution of the composition of the elite were processes over a long period, perhaps occurring over many generations. There are also many indications that the acquisition of respectability among neighbours took place in various ways, among which are the holding of village offices, the possession of a large property and the holding of other functions relevant to the village’s social, economic and cultural life. This issue is described on the example of the Krzeczów eldership – a complex of royal estates once located near Bochnia.
