Summary/Abstract: Spatial particularities in the drawings by people with autism have certain specifics, which could be defined as typical of the group as a whole. These are a result of some of the cognitive deficits or hyper development. Two opposite lines are differentiated: the first is a hyper-developed estimation of space, volume, representation of three-dimensional objects, etc. The second one is a pathological inability to assimilate objects as complete, proportionate, volumetric, moving, etc. Escalation of some spheres of perception in people with autism is a frequently occurring feature, which suggests not high intelligence. It is impossible to judge their mental stature solely by the characteristics of a picture. The article presents part of the works by autistic ‘geniuses’, who often are with Asperger Syndrome. These tend to show extreme precision of drawing and a very good estimation of volumes, unbelievable visual memory and orientation. The pictures by people with low-functioning autism, in their turn, show evident signs of mental retardation. Considering and differentiation of the particularities observed in the pictures would allow for defining the mental, cognitive and general development of people with autism. These could be singled out as an important diagnostic criterion to be used by various specialists.
