Summary/Abstract: Trends, particularly typical of the genre stylistics of musical theatre in the USA in the late twentieth century, have gradually taken American musical theatre works to a whole new level. Part of the examined tendencies emerged in the 1920’s and the 1930’s and consequently, is also observed in the paper. Similar trends, typical of the genre stylistics of the musical theatre in Western Europe, are also considered. This paper studies those trends, which the author of the text believes to have influenced most directly Leonard Bernstein’s operatic works. At the same time, the composer’s approach to the trends under consideration taken by him in his pieces has been studied in detail. The paper combines elements of the following methods of research: historical, theoretical, analytical, comparative and structural.
