Summary/Abstract: The study examines the polyphonic methods used in the opera Le grand macabre by Gyorgy Ligeti and their role in the dramaturgic and compositional construction of the work. The topic of the report is not well studied in Bulgaria. Although some works by Ligeti are studied in details, there is no general musical-dramaturgical analysis of the operas. That is why the present study is an analysis by Vera Tzenova on the polyphony as a main principle for the creation of the opera Le grand macabre. The analyses include also analogies with ancient polyphonic forms and structures as well as the use of ancient monophonic quoted themes. Articulated are the factors that have influenced the formation of the creative works of Ligeti and his provoking striving for modernizing polyphonic techniques. Studied in details are the unique novel approaches of the composer. Uncovered is the emblematic role of Le grand macabre for the development of the opera genre after the second half of the 20th century. The study is accompanied by historical references, short description of the opera's contents, information about contemporary staging of the work in Europe and the USA, etc. The development of the thesis is based on foreign language materials, part of which has been specially ordered by the Institute of Art Studies at the BAS. The article is also based on a number of research methods: analytical-structural, historicaltheoretical and comparative.
