Summary/Abstract: The text gives a general idea of the fundamental principles underlying the study on private collections in Bulgaria. A brief review is given of the political situation in Bulgaria following 1989 and what prerequisites are created for forming of private collections. Such topical issues are broached as the art market (various mechanisms of acquisition of works of art) and legislation as well as the public mindset towards collecting of artworks. The relationships between collectors of/traders in art; collectors/experts working for them (restores, evaluators, art historians, art managers) are analysed. An exhibition mounted in 2010 at the National Gallery for Foreign Art, Sofia by the Collector Union in Bulgaria is provided as an example of an event and response by collectors to the problems in the field.
