Summary/Abstract: This paper is part of a more comprehensive study of the performances of Stanislav Stratiev`s plays in former Czechoslovakia. It is based first of all on work at the particular archives of the Theatre Institutes in Bratislava and Prague, as well as on conversations with directors and theatre historians involved in putting Stratiev’s plays on the stage in that period. The study seeks to problematize the reception of Stratiev’s works in that foreign context in terms of a few important aspects: first of all, through exploring the specifics of the Czechoslovakian theatrical situation in that period and bringing to the fore its typological parallels with the Bulgarian one; secondly, through exploring the stage interpretations of Stratiev’s plays in terms of leading aesthetical practices and traditions of Slovakian theatre, and last but not least, through a comparative analysis of the type of critical reception of Stratiev’s works in both countries; common communist past and all the arising ideological prerequisites. The paper devotes closer attention to the three of a total of eight productions of Stratiev’s comedies by Slovakian theatres.
