Summary/Abstract: There is a working stage, a stage of an encounter with archive materials from the repositories of the National Academy of Arts and of museums, of research and analyses, of initial observations and commentary and a stage preceding the opportunity of exhaustiveness and ultimate formulation of the problems behind this long title. The paper examines the arrangement of work at the Applied Arts Department of the Academy of Arts, the personal academic teaching staff changes, the modifications of the curricula and the subjects taught. The evolutionary line from decorative to applied arts is sought in the specialized training courses for aspiring artists as well. The leading role of the teachers for the development of certain studios and subjects is also covered: Stoian Rainov (ceramics), Dechko Uzunov (decorative art), Atanas Dudulov (woodcarving) and Ivan Penkov (decorative art).
