On the Issue of the Evolution of Decorativeness in Stoyan Rainov’s (1894–1978) Ceramics

Summary/Abstract: Stoyan Rainov was a leading figure in Bulgaria’s applied arts in modern times. He played a key role in the development of art ceramics as a free creative contribution and an academic subject. The paper explores a key moment in his artistic career in the course of the general evolutionary line of development of this art. In 1927 he came back home after two years in Paris, took his degree, received an applied art award and was ready for his first solo exhibition of art ceramics. The paper focuses mainly on his two solo shows of ceramics in 1929 and in 1931. Reviews of that period were drawn to the analysis to define the major characteristics of his achievements. Comparing the two events and mostly, the artworks on display the issues of the evolution of decorativeness are considered both as a general development and an individual career as well as the domestic-foreign relation or traditional-adopted, technical-technological problems and the matter of manner.
