The American correspondence of Todor Todorov

Summary/Abstract: The paper deals with the huge correspondence of Todor Todorov, kept at his personal collection at the Music Folklore Archive of the Institute of Art Studies, BAS, a folder he himself called Letters from America. Among his overseas correspondents are Timothy Rice, Lauren Brody, Steve Bloom, Martha Forsyth, Ethel Rime, Charles Kail, Adam O’Connor, Donna Buchanan. The best part of the letters reveals the interest of the Bulgarian researcher in the development of science in the USA (music dialects and their study; the contemporary life of folk music, etc.) and the subjects of interest in Bulgarian folklore shown by American ethnomusicologists (for instance, the uneven beats theory). The correspondence gives also information of the intense exchange in researchers (grants, training) and in ideas of joint projects. The ‘American Correspondence” of Todor Todorov has been conducted since 1988 until the end-twentieth century, revealing details of the latest (almost unexplored for the time being) history of music folklore studies/ethnomusicology.
