Summary/Abstract: The seventeenth-century theorists proceed from the text in their teaching about the use of rhetorical devices in music. The analysis makes it clear which words and how have been accentuated. For the purpose, the ascending or descending melodic lines, accents or pauses could be discerned. Music theorists give practical instructions how to treat texts so as to achieve clarity and expressiveness of the guiding idea and its musical rendering. Occurrences of musical steps, motives and links analogous to the figures of speech suggest such similarity in instrumental music as well. The analysis of Part I of Sonata for Flute by Carl Philipp allows for summing up some of the characteristic of his style particularities of his work with rhetorical figures.
