Summary/Abstract: The article attempts to identify the most significant changes occurring in the idea of education through reading via reading guides from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The scope of the research includes advisory publications by Piotr Chmielowski, Adolf Dygasiński, Jan Karłowicz, and Władysław Kozłowski. The choice of analytical material reflects two conflicting educational trends in the anti-positivist breakthrough – traditional pedagogy (strongly embedded in the Herbartian system) and a new trend in education. Common to the mentioned guides is the recommending of appropriate books to those under their care, reaching the age of reading initiation.
