Summary/Abstract: At the beginning of the twentieth century there were statements in Catholic journalism about the need to establish parish libraries, intended mainly for rural readers. They were intended to compete with libraries established by secular educational societies. The need for the establishment of such libraries was justified by the inappropriate book selection in libraries run by educational societies, where books incompatible with Catholic morals and faith could be found. Noteworthy in this respect are the publications of Father Marian Leon Fulman (1864– 1945), later Bishop of Lublin. He was the author of a guide published in 1907 for those setting up parish libraries titled “Parish libraries, their need, establishment and method of running them”. As well as setting out the tasks of such libraries in promoting education in the Catholic spirit, he included practical advice for those wishing to set up and run such libraries. He also published articles on this subject and on the role of the clergy in promoting education among the people in the monthly magazine “Pastoral News”, which he edited from 1905 to 1907.
