Summary/Abstract: ‘Forbidden districts’ is a metaphorical phrase for small town or big city areas which are difficult to access and inhabited by outsiders, people who do not belong to the worlds of politics, big business or mainstream culture. Original and revealing prose of Masłowska is not easily accessible as her innovativeness cannot be interpreted only by means of references to mainstream cultural conventions, celebrity literature or even readers’ own intuitions shaped by the aesthetics of popular culture. The ethics and the aesthetics of her prose are outside established literary cannons of presenting man in the urban environment as Masłowska does not resort to conventional means of aestheticising life of social outcasts from forbidden districts. Her prose allows the reader to participate in the world which is shunned even by brave city guides.
