Summary/Abstract: The aim of this article is to attempt to answer the question of which characteristics should a modern-day librarian have in order to properly function in the changing environment, as well as realize the tasks placed before him. The work includes the concept of competences and their division, focusing especially on the communication competences. It also presents the necessity for constant education, and taking care of own development.
