Summary/Abstract: The author of the article refers to the opinions of researchers of literature for young readers as well as joins the description and interpretation of marine themes in children poetry, mainly in lyric poetry. The works discussed in this article were selected from poetry collections of Polish writers published during the last decades. The leading motif determining the choice was the motif of the sea and the like including, among others, the motif of water, seashell and sea journey. The description is not chronological, thus poems by Tadeusz Kubiak from 1959 are accompanied by works of contemporary authors such as Joanna Kulmowa, Joanna Papuzińska, Danuta Wawiłow and Zofia Beszczyńska. The material presented comprises mainly children lyric poetry in which references to marine themes were found. An attempt was made to show that marine and aquatic motifs fulfill numerous functions in children poetry and manifest themselves in a way characteristic for this type of writing.
