Diversification of energy sources as a necessity for energy security in the country, opportunities and dilemmas for nuclear energy

Summary/Abstract: Today, the production of energy (primary and secondary), constitutes a vital issue for every country. Its establishment in the area of long-term strategic policy also tells its specific weight and its role in the economic life of any country. Today, the primary target is the diversification of energy supply sources, to an energy mix, which besides traditional sources must consider the renewable energy like wind, sun and of course nuclear energy. Albania as a country with significant problems in this sector, is looking to find its dimension and space for development, although, not yet with a strategy and clear objectives. In this point of view, this article aims to explore the possibilities of application of nuclear energy for electricity production in Albania. This research will be based primarily on the current state of the energy system of the country and in the perspectives of the development of the electricity sector and nuclear energy based on the data from national agencies of the Energy Regulator Bureau (ERB) and the National Statistics Institution (NSI), and also on the data from international agencies of International Energy Agency (IEA)and International Institute of Applied System Analysis (IIASA).
