Summary/Abstract: The main aim of this paper is to assess the activity of local governments (communes) observed in the development of tourism in terms of the economic crisis. The considerations which are presented in the article are based on the results of direct survey research carried out among 49 local governments of Wielkopolska Voivodeship. The results of the research concerning local governments activity observed in the development of tourism are presented. The results concern six most important areas: 1) strategic and operational planning, 2) creating effective organizational structures, 3) financial and pro-investment policy, 4) cooperation between local governments and non-governmental organizations, 5) supporting local enterprise development, 6) propagating and promoting of tourism. The results presented in this paper show that despite the economic crisis, local governments effectively and efficiently fulfil their tasks in the development of tourism.
