Summary/Abstract: The financial crisis, which began in 2008 in United States of America quickly spread throughout the world and transformed into an economic crisis affecting real economies. This crisis has proven how globalized the world economy is and the negative effects that a country experiences spreads in chain in other countries. The economies of developing countries initially were not affected by the crises being less integrated into global financial markets and less exposed to sophisticated financial products, which were the focus of the crisis. But the deepening crisis in the second half of the year and the increase of its impact on real economies brought consequences in developing countries. In Albania the crisis did not affect the financial sector in those dimensions as in other countries and may even be said to negligible levels. This as a result of lack of exposure of the Albanian banking sector to more sophisticated financial products, to financial institutions that were the focus of the crisis and because of the low borrowing level in world financial markets. However, in the last quarter of 2008 due to the psychological effects caused by the crises many depositors withdrew their funds causing problems for the banks. This brought the need for more liquidity for the banks and a decrease of the lending level of the banking sector. However the liquidity situation stabilized very quickly through the awareness run by the Bank of Albania against deposit withdraw. The Albanian economy having as an important source the remittances from abroad felt the consequences of their decrease. This then leads to the decrease of consumer demand towards business products causing financial difficulties of the latter for payment of obligations. The purpose of this study is to analyze the credit risk by presenting the effect that the global crisis had on meeting the payment obligations by the Albanian borrowers. This study presents not only the effect of the crisis, but introduces the proposed measures (taken) to reduce the risk.
