Summary/Abstract: Compared to other countries in the region, Albania has been distinguished for impressive rhythms of economic growth during the transition period. Nevertheless, the country still remains the poorest in the region. Transition growth was clearly stimulated by the new incentives to appear after the collapse of centralised economy and the onset of the long journey towards market economy. These incentives were transformed into a more efficient allocation of resources, vigorously increasing the Productivity of the Entirety of Factors that contributed during 1993-2003, with nearly 98% to the real economic growth, while labour and capital, which could be considered as the “raw materials” of national growth, have given a rather modest contribution. Emigrants’ remittances as well as the recent increased crediting have provided the internal demand, in function of economic growth. In context of global economy shrinkage, the risks to the growth of the Albanian economy increase, especially bearing in mind the fact that the present columns of economic growth will naturally move towards consumption, and they are not expected to ensure the long-term sustainability of growth. Policymakers remain responsible for orienting policies towards augmenting the other production factors, the workforce and capital. In order to achieve this, it is needed a present investment in the education of the future labour force , in the country’s trade growth and integration as well as in the improvement of the quality and efficiency of public institutions at all levels.
