Summary/Abstract: The paper examines the theory of the end of the work society (Arbeitsgesellschaft), in particular of the argument according to which in the future ‘the social significance of work will radically decrease’. The authors argue that today money-earning work is at the centre of social esteem and identity construction more than ever before. The concept of work has become universal, its ‘boundaries have been dissolved’. The paper analyses the dissolution of boundaries of work from the temporal, spatial and social relations points of view as well as in terms of its essence, meaning; which processes are suggested to be inseparable from the transformations of previous patterns of family, gender roles and life course. It is argued that the dissolution of the boundaries of work is not a complete and homogenous one, and managing the change puts addition burdens on the individual. Therefore it is suggested that the critique of the capitalist work organization has to become more complex: more than simply criticizing the rigid constraints of Fordism, it has to draw attention to the new dangers of the process of boundary dissolution.
