Summary/Abstract: The author attempts a new reading of Adam Mickiewicz’s classic poem for Polish language education. He notes that the phenomenon of youth created by Romanticism may prove not only useless, but also harmful to the reflection on the contemporary concept of solidarity The researcher points out that the negative protagonist of Ode to Youth – „an amphibian in a shell”, which until now has been a metaphor for egoism – demands reinterpretation in the spirit of ecocriticism and engaged humanities.
