Summary/Abstract: The present study aims to identify, analyse and illustrate with concrete examples – a selection of art works and famous artists – the complex interaction between art and politics, viewed from an historical perspective. We propose a comparative research of various manners of using art as a political expression tool, through social messages and propaganda discourses, identifying the mechanisms artists use in order to react to different political events, the way they perceived the social issues, and the modalities through which both the censure and the expression liberty shaped the art world. Using examples of art works from the XVIII-XIX century period, but also from the contemporary époque, we analyse the mechanism of reciprocal influence between politics and art, emphasizing the fundamental importance of this peculiar, very dynamic relationship, for the structuration of the social life.
