Summary/Abstract: The text explores the development and decline of the „chanchada“ – popular and ingenuous comedies with music, songs and dance related to carnival themes and characters and aimed at the common people. This specifically Brazilian film genre is examined in the context of film production from the 1930s to the 1960s. The main conceptual, thematic and visual characteristics of the genre are analyzed as well as the contribution of its most prominent representatives. Attention is paid to two subgenres – the „pornochanchadas” and the parodies – also a unique, purely Brazilian contribution to the history of cinema. Finally the author analyses the assessment of the Cinema Novo directors, fierce critics of the chanchada’s values, who changed their attitude over time and recognized its strong connections with the national cinema and its authentic popular character.
