Summary/Abstract: Empowering people with disabilities to become independent and autonomous is crucial to their fulfilling life. Studies and background search show that crucial factors in this process include personal assistance, support for independent living and programmes aimed at vocational rehabilitation. What is also important is the development of skills for everyday life. In addition, support for the families caring for these people is key to successfully coping with the challenges. In general, the development of independence for people with disabilities requires a multidisciplinary approach and respect for individual needs. This article provides an overview of different forms of support and interventions aimed at helping these individuals reach their full potential for independent and quality living.
