Between an Encyclopedia and a Map: Interactive Geovisualizations as a Tool in the History of Literature

Summary/Abstract: The article overviews digital maps in literary studies that spatially organize knowledgeabout literature and its past by topographically addressing that, which is narrative. Theauthor explores hybrid interactive literary geovisualizations. She analyzes academicportals that combine features of encyclopedias and maps, attempts at applyingliterary cartography instruments in education, and projects created by amateurs withto geomedia tools. Furthermore, the article examines literary applications that allowtracking past journeys of writers. The author discusses forms that enable walking onpaths made of literary traces. The text touches on the cognitive and ideological aspectsof tools in digital humanities: interactive and playable maps.
