Summary/Abstract: The article presents the results of research on the phenomenon of artists’ compulsion to create in the context of the classic theory of the hierarchy of needs introduced by Abraham Maslow (1995b). The research study was exploratory and qualitative in nature, and its aim was to develop the characteristics of the mentioned phenomenon and to recognize its importance for the process of self-actualization among research participants. In the publication, I focus on the aspect of empirical analyses which concerned the relation between the compulsion to create and self-actualization, as well as the conflicts between gratification of the compulsion to create and lower-level needs (in particular the need for material security, belonging, and love) experienced by artists.
