Summary/Abstract: The question – which is not new – of the essence of Slavia Orthodoxa is provoked by ArnoldToynbee‘s delineation of civilizations and the continual attempts to theoretically distinguishbetween civilization and culture. The author seeks to answer the question by sharingVyacheslav Stepin‘s view of the defining role of deep social structures for language as thebeginning of the complex supra-biological programs of culture. Language is seen as a set ofthree layers of culture marked by worldview universals within shifting conceptual spheres.Their concrete realization through the reflective cultural deep surface structures is evidenceof cultural memory, elevated – thanks to the Bulgarian language policy until the end of the14th century – to a cultural identity of the Slavia Orthodoxa community – the EasternOrthodox Slavic civilization.
