Summary/Abstract: Some of the earliest sacred places were the caves and the megalithic structures – single pieces or a composition of large stones. What is common between them is the material used, namely the rock. In prehistory and in antiquity, the Earth as a nature element with its two representations – the rock and the soil, were attributed to the Great Mother Goddess. Stone has always been used for creating sacred spaces, but over the centuries, it has lost its primal rough look. However, at the beginning of the 20th century, its original aesthetics has turned into a source of inspiration for impressive sacred architecture. This trend can be traced until today. This article examines the roots of the rock-based architectural archetypes in order to explain its symbolic and psychological effects. To clarify this architectural and social process, it presents and analyzes a selection of contemporary sacred spaces, inspired by the aesthetics and symbolism of the rock and based on ancient architectural models, starting from an iconic project by Le Corbusier.
