Europeanization of the national political system through EU policies: Political advantages and risks of institutional governance

Summary/Abstract: The article explores the Europeanization of national policies in the context of institutional adjustment for the implementation of EU policies, as a distinct part of the concept of Europeanization in European studies. Institutional adjustment is merely one aspect of this research concept, considering that the concept of Europeanization holds equal value in research areas concerning the transfer of public policies, the creation of European law, as well as a number of other processes of adaptation and convergence that form this distinctive structure of governance. The paper deals with institutional adjustment regarding its advantages and risks during the implementation of European policies, as well as the execution of diverse and numerous European projects. It describes how institutional dynamics, particularly the ones in which member states are dominant actors, achieve the objectives of implementing European policies, as well as the institutional developments the European Union pursued in creating this complex political system. Primarily, it investigates institutional and policy adjustments as a result of multiple compromises during historical-institutional development, followed by an analysis of the political advantages and risks of institutional Europeanization.
