Summary/Abstract: This article explores the ongoing debates around the principles of "aesthetic autonomy" and their relevance in contemporary Romanian literature, particularly in light of political correctness and cancel culture. It examines the August 2023 incident where journalist Valeriu Nicolae criticized Bogdan-Alexandru Stănescu's novel "Copilăria lui Kaspar Hauser" for allegedly portraying the Roma minority negatively. The incident sparked polarized reactions within the Romanian cultural field, raising questions about the need to reconfigure critical and literary discourse. The article analyzes whether concepts like "political correctness" and "cancel culture" are legitimate needs for cultural re-evaluation or mere conceptual ghosts. It discusses the potential impact of these debates on literary canons, educational programs, and public sensitivity to ethical reconsiderations, and invites a deeper analysis of these phenomena in Romanian society.
