Summary/Abstract: The article presents the current conditions and effects of managing Polish cities in the most critical aspects of their functioning. The study aims to present and determine the significance of the main processes that pose development challenges for Polish cities, being the factors of their further development stimulated by management. The article also presents a hierarchical system of documents shaping urban policy in Poland and instruments of local authorities for city management. In the methodic part, deductive analyses in accordance with the concept of the systemic approach were used. As the results of the analyses show, the management of Polish cities has to face the degradation of the urban fabric, chaotic dispersion of buildings, depopulation, economic and social segregation, a lack of cultural awareness, sense of identity and co‑ responsibility of residents, poverty, the state of the environment, street congestion and many other aspects. The activities of local authorities should be aimed at solving problems arising from the development of the city, as well as stimulating their future development.
